Profits Fade as ZIM Integrated Shipping Services Faces Dual Pressure

ZIM Integrated Shipping Services reported a net loss of USD 86 million in Q1 2026 as revenue fell 30% and average container freight rates declined sharply ahead of its merger with Hapag-Lloyd. Despite mounting pressure from rising fuel costs linked to tensions in the Persian Gulf, the carrier remains optimistic about a recovery in trans-Pacific trade and its flexible spot-market strategy to improve performance in the second half of the year

ZIM Integrated Shipping Services has reported its financial results for Q1 2026, posting a net loss of USD 86 million, marking a sharp reversal from the USD 296 million net profit recorded during the same period last year. Diluted loss per share came in at USD 0.71, highlighting the ongoing normalization of the global container shipping market following the overheated growth cycle seen in 2025. Revenue at the Israeli carrier declined by 30% year-on-year to USD 1.4 billion, as the company moves toward the final stages of its acquisition by Germany-based Hapag-Lloyd.

Operational data showed that ZIM transported 866,000 TEUs during the first quarter, down 8% compared to Q1 2025. Alongside lower cargo volumes, the company’s average freight rate dropped significantly to USD 1,310 per TEU, representing a 26% decline year-on-year. Other financial indicators also weakened considerably, with adjusted EBITDA falling 60% to USD 313 million, while operating loss (EBIT) stood at USD 18 million. The downturn was primarily attributed to softer shipping demand and a steep decline in spot freight rates, placing direct pressure on the profit margins of carriers heavily exposed to the spot market.

According to President and CEO Eli Glickman, the company had anticipated weaker earnings as container freight markets gradually cooled. However, global supply chains are now facing additional uncertainty stemming from geopolitical tensions in the Persian Gulf related to Iran. Although fuel cost impacts remained relatively limited during Q1, ZIM expects stronger pressure in the second quarter, prompting the carrier to implement freight rate increases and apply marine fuel surcharges to offset rising operational costs.

Despite current challenges, the outlook for the second half of 2026 remains relatively positive, supported by the recovery of trans-Pacific shipping routes. ZIM currently maintains approximately 65% of its contract volume on these routes linked to spot freight rates, a strategy that allows the company to adjust capacity more flexibly in response to market fluctuations. If demand growth and freight rate improvements continue across major trade lanes, the carrier’s financial performance is expected to improve significantly before its formal integration into Hapag-Lloyd’s global logistics network.
