Cyberattacks: The New Bottleneck in Global Logistics

Cybersecurity has officially become a strategic priority for the logistics industry as the average global data breach cost reached a record USD 4.88 million in 2024 alongside the rapid escalation of cyberattacks targeting maritime transport. Businesses must shift from reactive problem-solving to proactive security-by-design strategies, focusing on data standardization and workforce training to protect supply chains from costly operational disruptions.

The maritime shipping industry recorded a sharp surge in cyberattacks, with at least 64 incidents reported in 2023, a dramatic increase from just three cases in 2013 and virtually none two decades ago. According to IBM’s latest report, the global average cost of a data breach reached USD 4.88 million in 2024, up 10% year-on-year and marking the highest level ever recorded. This trend exposes a critical vulnerability as many companies continue prioritizing delivery speed and freight costs while overlooking the stability and transparency of data flows across supply chains.

The transition toward autonomous supply chains, expected to account for up to 45% of the market by 2035, is turning the logistics sector into an increasingly attractive target for cybercriminal organizations. Experts at Maersk emphasize that cybersecurity is no longer simply an innovation initiative but has become an essential operational standard, comparable to basic business hygiene. The logistics cybersecurity market is projected to grow at an annual rate of 12%, reaching USD 36.6 billion by the end of 2037 as companies seek protection against attacks capable of paralyzing warehouse systems and vehicle fleets.

In Vietnam, cybersecurity risks are often underestimated or delegated entirely to IT departments without sufficient attention from senior management. Viewing logistics merely as a fixed operational cost causes many businesses to overlook vulnerabilities in multi-party coordination, where a single non-compliant link can disrupt an entire network. Domestic enterprises need to accelerate data standardization, hidden cost measurement, and route-specific risk classification instead of reacting only after incidents occur.

Between 2019 and 2023, approximately 5,000 patents related to logistics cybersecurity were registered, focusing primarily on Zero-Trust architectures and endpoint protection solutions. Despite continuous technological advancement, human factors remain the leading source of risk as phishing campaigns and ransomware attacks become increasingly sophisticated. Investment in workforce training and realistic incident response planning is widely considered a strategic approach that can save companies millions of dollars in losses while preserving long-term competitiveness in the digital era.
